Hey Y’all! I hope you’ve had an incredible week! And if not, well, how lucky you happened to have landed here today!

I’ve been wanting to talk about this topic for a while but really struggled with how to get it out. The words just weren’t coming smoothly. Well, while scrolling through a link up the other day I came across the post, 10 Ways to Have More Joy In Each Day shared first on Spreading Joy.

I’m not going to add to her list because it’s pretty thorough and, in my opinion, needs no amending, But I did want to expand on a piece of given advice that is SO CRUCIAL! So! Let’s talk about number two on the list of 10 Ways to Have More Joy In Each Day: Think Positively

It can be so easy to get caught up in wrong thinking. And when I say “wrong thinking” I mean, thoughts that don’t line up with God. It can be so easy to get consumed by criticism, fear, comparison, or anxiety; thoughts that simply don’t come from God. Thoughts that leave you feeling condemned, hopeless, worthless, and isolated.

When the enemy starts planting those seeds it can be difficult to uproot them. But there is a way! When the devil starts speaking lies, YOU TAKE AUTHORITY. You Philippians 4:8 the heck out of those lies and you speak the truth.

No Positive Thought In The World..

Positive thoughts are great, but what I’ve learned is that when the though isn’t sincere it doesn’t seem to carry me to a safe place. Instead it leaves me questioning.

For example, I’ve written before about how I am not the patient person. Especially when it comes to parenting. God’s really had to sit down and teach me how to love through His patience. I remember there being days where I would literally sit on my bed after a breakdown in communication with my little one and I would just feel so condemned.

I’d replay the incident in my mind and think about how horrible of a mother I am. I’d hate myself for snapping, for screaming, for walking away; for not having patience. For not being a perfect mom in an imperfect moment. I’d imagine what people would think if they saw that side of me and just feel disgusted. And no positive thought in the world could turn that around; except one rooted in truth.

How to “Philippians 4:8” Your Way to Peace

“Finally, believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God’s word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things [center your mind on them, and implant them in your heart].”

– Philippians 4:8 (AMP)

God teaches us through the Bible how to discern our thoughts and where to focus them. When you find yourself in a slump and your thoughts seem to be dragging you down you need to refocus your thoughts.

Ask yourself, are these thoughts:

  •  true?
  • honorable (worthy of respect)?
  • right (confirmed by God’s word)?
  •  lovely?
  • admirable (of good report)?

If the answer to even one of these questions is no, then you’ve been fed something other than the Truth of God’s Word.

10 Ways to Have More Joy In Your Day

Chipping Away at the Lie

Let’s go back to my example for a moment.

When I was feeling down and defeated as a mom I should have asked myself, are these thoughts true? The answer at that moment would have been no. And here’s how I know. God’s truth doesn’t condemn, it convicts. It always points back to redemption in Him. Condemnation says you’ve failed and there’s not going back. God says “you’ve fallen short, but with me, you can be better. Let’s fix this.” God’s truth builds us up.

I should have asked myself back then, are these thoughts right (confirmed by God’s truth)? The answer again would have been no. God tell us in His Word that if anyone is in Him we are a new creation. The old is gone and all things are new (2 Corinthians 5:17). And because I have been made new I have the gift of the Holy Spirit (sent by God to be our helper). And the fruits of the Spirit are love, JOY, peace, PATIENCE, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, GENTLENESS, and SELF-CONTROL (Galatians 5:22-23). I am equipped to take on every parenting challenge that comes my way.

Through Christ, I Can

So when the devil says, “You can’t handle this.” WRONG. God says through His Spirit I have self-control. When the devil says, “His behavior is never going to straighten out. You need to make yourself heard.” Wrong again! Through Christ, I have the ability to speak and act kindly and even wait patiently for the situation to settle down. I will be a source of PEACE in my home!

See how that works? And I find that the more I walk in those sort of truths (biblical sound truths) the more I am able to walk in joy.

Friends we have to be able to chip away at the wrong thoughts the devil tries to feed us. Think Positively! Line your thoughts up with God’s word! Philippians 4:8 your way to more joy!

What tricks do you have up your sleeve for experiencing more joy in your everyday life?

  1. Great post! I’m a fan of positive thinking, although it can be very hard to do. Sometimes I find that the easiest way to break out of negativity is to just give myself a break. For example, if I can’t focus on doing house chores or writing blog posts because of all the negative things lurking in my mind, then I’ll go for a walk. Normally that gives me a chance to reset my mind so I can become more positive again.

  2. Great read- whenever I start with quiet time in the Word at least I start off on the right track … But then of course life happens but trying to line up our mind to be positive is not easy but so important.

    1. I’ve noticed my days too, go much better when I start them with Jesus. It’s also easier for me to see things in a good light when I’ve spent time in the Bible.

  3. This is such an encouraging post. Something that brings me joy is doing something kind for someone, or being a blessing to someone. That always cheers me up 🙂

    1. I think it’s one of the coolest things to watch a smile form on someones face because of something kind you did. Best feeling!
And thank you! I’m happy to hear this post encouraged you 🙂
