Are you looking for powerful prayer books to inspire your prayer life?

I love studying the topic of prayer because the message that rings clear in every study is how eager God is to love us and talk to us. Prayer provides that opportunity.

Fun fact about me; I also tend to overthink things. If I’m not careful, I find that I get in my own way when it comes to a prayer relationship with God because I overthink it. That’s another reason I enjoy Christian prayer books; they help me focus on the main thing – hearing the heart of Jesus.

In this article, I’m sharing some of the powerful prayer books that have impacted my life the most. I’ll also answer some of the lingering questions that have come up about prayer books.

Do Christians have a prayer book?
What book of the Bible is about prayer?
How do you begin to pray?

Keep reading for a list of Best books on how to pray and answers to these common questions.

Do Christians Have a Prayer Book?

What book do Christians pray from? There are some prayers, poems, and songs of worship that are written down and recorded for the purpose of praying together during gatherings. We refer to these as liturgy. I consider liturgy books to be powerful prayers books because of the unity they produce. They keep us praying in unity with each other and in unity with God’s will. Liturgy isn’t the only way we should pray, but it is a life-giving way to pray.

If you’ve ever ended a church service with this prayer and song, you’ve participated in liturgy,

Praise God from whom all blessings flow.
Praise Him all creatures here below.
Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts.
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.”
(The Doxology)

Aside from the Bible there isn’t a prayer book or liturgy book that represents all Christians.

There are Catholic prayer books that include daily liturgy (written prayers) that are often recited during catholic services and prayer hours.

Some examples of liturgy-style Christian prayer books are, Liturgies from the Past and Present by Jonathon Gibson and Mark Earngey and Every Moment Holy by Douglas Kaine McKelvey.

There are a lot of Christian books about prayer on the market, but every legitimate one will be rooted in the foundations of the Bible. The Bible has plenty to say about prayer. In the next portion of this article, I’ll point you towards my Bible passages about prayer.

What Book of the Bible Is About Prayer?

Most Christian books on prayer are based on specific passages of prayer in the Bible. For example, Praying God’s Word by Beth Moore; each chapter of that book directs readers back to specific passages in the Bible about prayer.

What books of the Bible teach us about prayer?

Many people refer to Psalms as the Prayer Book of the Bible. They teach us how to be honest and vulnerable in our prayers without losing sight of who God is and the hope we have in Him. Pslams also models how to make a celebration and praise a part of our prayer life.

Matthew chapter 6 and Luke chapter 11 both record how Jesus taught His disciples to pray. We call this particular prayer, “The Lord’s Prayer.” R.C. Sproul breaks down the significance of this prayer in his book, The Prayer of the Lord.

This article outlines what the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) teach us about Jesus’ prayer life.

How Do You Begin to Pray?

I’m thoroughly convinced there isn’t just one right way to pray. When we study how to pray according to the Bible there is so much variety presented to us its crazy to think there could only be one way to say an honest prayer. Even the best books on how to pray vary in their steps and priorities.

I one hundred percent believe that the condition of our hearts when we pray is far more important than the formula we follow for prayer.

We cover this in-depth in my book, A Woman’s Guide to Steadfast Prayer. This book is essentially a guide to learning how to pray for beginners.
