I can’t think of a time of year that is more busy and full than Christmas. For some is overwhelming, for others it’s comfortable and homey – but for all of us, if we aren’t careful, it can be a distraction from the very One we are gathering to celebrate. That’s why I love the idea of studying Christmas Bible verses or finding a good Christmas Bible study during the holidays. It’s an intentional step I can take to keep our focus where it belongs. There are some great Christmas themed Bible studies out there I’m really excited to point you to!

If you’re looking for suggestions for group Bibles Studies for Christmas, I have recommendations for you also.

First, let’s talk about the original Christmas story and answer some common key questions about Christmas in the Bible.

Is Christmas In the Bible?

Christmas as a holiday is not mentioned in the Bible, BUT the event we gather to celebrate is very real. It’s prophesied and described throughout the entire Bible. The holiday itself wasn’t established in the United States until the 1800s.

Why is Christmas important to Christians?

Christmas is important to Christians because it celebrates the day our Savior was born. When sin entered the world it brought death with it. Romans 6:23 tell us,

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Sin and death were eternal problems. Christmas is important because it represents the day that God provided the eternal solution; Jesus. For Christians, Christmas celebrates an ongoing and never-ending victory.

Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 1 John 5:5

What is the true message of Christmas? What is Christmas according to the Bible? The true meaning of Christmas in the Bible can be summed up by John 3:16.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believe in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16

Christmas is the day God gave the world the gift f Jesus.

Jesus said to them, I am the way, the truth, and the life… John 14:6

Did Jesus celebrate Christmas?

Christmas as a holiday wasn’t established during Jesus’ lifetime. Of all the Bible verses about the Christmas story, not one hints at Jesus celebrating His own birth. 

When was Jesus actually born?

The Bible doesn’t give an exact date or month for Jesus’ birth but it does give us some clues. You can read through them in detail here. Here’s the short answer. Based on the biblical timeline and details of Jesus’ birth, scholars believe he was born around September.

Are there Bible Verses About Christmas Trees?

A lot of people read Jeremiah 10:3-4 and come to an understanding that Christmas trees are idols. If that’s your conviction, that’s ok. I’m not here to change your mind. I do think it’s important to consider the context when reading this verse though. In these verses, God is talking to people who literally believe they are creating their own gods. They carve them, name them, clothe and decorate them, and treat them as if they are a deity.

There is a name for these trees. They call them “Asheroth poles” or “Asherah poles”. The people would go as far as offering sacrifices to these trees. When wicked kings came to power in Israel they would put these poles to mark sites of worship. When godly kings came into power, they would tear them down. 

It’s pretty clear to see that the thought process and the actions tied to this pagan practice are very different from the thought process and actions surrounding Christmas trees. They are not the same thing. I believe whether you decorate with a Christmas tree or not is a matter of conviction.

Now, back to the Christmas story.

What Book of the Bible is the Christmas Story In?

If you’re wondering what book in the Bible tells the Christmas story, you can find it in two places:

• Matthew chapters 1 & 2
• Luke chapters 1 & 2

In Luke 1 you’ll read the angel’s birth announcements of both John the Baptist and Jesus and the prophecies spoken over both. It truly does set the stage for understanding why Christmas is important to Christians.

In Luke 2 you’ll find Bible verses about Christmas Eve and read about the birth of Jesus and how the angels, the prophets, the shepherds, and even the King responded.

In addition (if you want to go deeper), you’ll find some really good Bible verses about Jesus’ birth in the Old Testament books of the prophet. Like this one is Isaiah 9:6,

For to us a child is born, to us, a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace”
Isaiah 9:6

It’s cool how the birth of Jesus was on the minds of nations far before it ever took place. From the moment sin entered the world people were looking for a Savior to undo all the wrongs that sin brought into the world. Jesus’ birth was long-awaited and long foretold.

Isaiah 7:14 – Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Zechariah 9:9 – Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Isaiah 11:1 – There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.

Micah 5:2 – “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”

Jeremiah 23:5-6 – Behold the days are coming,” declares the Lord, “When I will raise up for David a righteous branch; And He will reign as king and act wisely and do justice and righteousness in the land. In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will live securely; and this is His name by which He will be called, “The Lord Our Righteousness.’

What Does the Christmas Story Teach Us About God?

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to walk in the shoes of those waiting for Jesus to be born? I know it sounds a bit silly. How could we possibly know, right? But I was thinking about it not too long ago and I realized, I am there. You and I are both walking in those shoes – hopefully anticipating the return of our Lord and Savior. Does that excite you as it does me?

There is so much we can learn from Christmas story Bible verses that can give us hope for today. So while we’re reading scripture and Christmas Bible lessons and we’re reminiscing and being reminded of the significance of this season – let’s also remember this hope is good for today too. Let’s use these things as reminders for us today as we eagerly anticipate the return of our Messiah.

Christmas Teaches Us That God Is Faithful

Consider this. The birth of Jesus is the beginning of the fulfillment of a promise that dates all the way back to the garden of Eden (see Genesis 3:15). The day we fell into sin, God made provision for our salvation. The birth of Jesus is the beginning of that provision.

Christmas Teaches That God never leaves us hopeless.

It feels that way sometimes, but the more I study scripture and the more I see God’s plan for redemption roll out in its pages. God does not leave His people hopeless. He demonstrates this in the Old Testament through His relationship with the Hebrew people. No matter what wrongs they committed (there were plenty), what trials befell them (there were plenty of those too), or how much they distanced themselves from the Lord He always provided a way back to Him. He always picked them up and offered them hope. He always came through. God repeats this pattern with the birth of Jesus. It’s through His life, death, and resurrection that He draws us back to eternity with Him.

Christmas Teaches Us That God’s Love Doesn’t Fail

It’s relentless, victorious, and matchless; and it is life. John 3:16 reads, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever would believe in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” The birth of Jesus is the beginning of this glorious act of love.

There is no story like the original Christmas story.
