It’s easy to overlook the importance of repentance in the Bible. In a lot of modern churches, they claim there’s not really a need for it. They say God’s grace covers our sin so it doesn’t really matter how we live. This is a misunderstanding of God’s grace. It’s also a misunderstanding of the actual gospel message. The gospel that Jesus, those before Him, and the disciples after Him taught is a “gospel of repentance.”
What I love most about Genealogies in the Bible is that no matter how far back we go our origins all point to the same beginning – God. Suddenly, we’re humbled. We realize that regardless of our bloodlines and all our culture distinction (which are beautiful thing) we are all God’s creation; the work of His hands (Genesis 1 and Psalm 139); created for a single purpose – to know Him and make Him known.
The power of covenant in the Bible can be summed up by the fact that the God of the Bible is the only God who publicly and privately keeps His covenants. When He speaks a word, it happens. This is what set the God of the Bible apart from the false gods of other nations. He wasn’t made by human hands. He doesn’t function by human design. He speaks His own words. And the words He speaks never return void. Covenants gives us a promise to hold onto and look forward to. Covenants inspire hope.
We know when it comes to the creation of the Earth (or the origins of Earth) it had everything to do with God. Genesis carries the first but also the basic descriptions of creation in the Bible. Some of the more jaw dropping descriptions are found in Job, Isaiah, and the Psalms. We’ll look at them together after we review the timeline of the 7 days of creation in the Bible.
