What I love most about Genealogies in the Bible is that no matter how far back we go our origins all point to the same beginning – God. Suddenly, we’re humbled. We realize that regardless of our bloodlines and all our culture distinction (which are beautiful thing) we are all God’s creation; the work of His hands (Genesis 1 and Psalm 139); created for a single purpose – to know Him and make Him known.
The power of covenant in the Bible can be summed up by the fact that the God of the Bible is the only God who publicly and privately keeps His covenants. When He speaks a word, it happens. This is what set the God of the Bible apart from the false gods of other nations. He wasn’t made by human hands. He doesn’t function by human design. He speaks His own words. And the words He speaks never return void. Covenants gives us a promise to hold onto and look forward to. Covenants inspire hope.
Cain and Abel were both raised as God-fearers. Meaning they recognized the sovereignty of God and they were raised to serve Him and Him alone. Considering Adam and Eve’s past with God and the consequences they faced after He removed them from the garden, it makes sense that they would raise their children to know and fear God. Unfortunately, just because we raise someone in truth doesn’t mean that they will wholeheartedly conform to the truth. And even if they conform in action, they don’t always conform in heart – which is what we witness first had through the story of Cain.
For a long time I wondered about Passover for Christians. Knowing that Passover is a big part of Jewish history, I didn’t want to seem insensitive or like I was trampling on Jewish tradition if I participated. For years I remember hearing that Passover is only for Jewish people. So imagine my surprise when I was reading my Bible and saw Paul teaching new followers of Jesus in Corinth about Passover and explains to them exactly why it’s relevant.
We know when it comes to the creation of the Earth (or the origins of Earth) it had everything to do with God. Genesis carries the first but also the basic descriptions of creation in the Bible. Some of the more jaw dropping descriptions are found in Job, Isaiah, and the Psalms. We’ll look at them together after we review the timeline of the 7 days of creation in the Bible.
