How to Become A Woman of Faith

Perfection may be unattainable, but being a woman of faith is not. We (the American church) tend to make faith more complicated than it needs to be. In this post, we’re going to be concise. We’re going to explain exactly what faith is according to the Bible and you lead towards some of the steps you can take on your own to become a woman of faith.

And we’re going to jump straight to the starting point. Ready friends? Let’s look at our first verse, Hebrews 11:6.

What Exactly is Faith?

“But without faith, it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him”   Hebrews 11:6

Living a purposeful faith comes down to this very verse. The crux of a Christian walk is to please God, and as Hebrews 11:6 states, “without faith, it is impossible to please Him.”

So we know that faith is something that is required of us. We can not do the work of pleasing God without it. It’s essential. Knowing this should drive us to search out what faith actually is. What is it composed of? We hear the word quite often in Christian circles but honestly, how often do we toss this word about without really having a firm grasp on what it means? Many boil it down to a matter of belief, and though that is true, it still only gives us the tip of the iceberg. To be a woman of faith, we absolutely must know its full meaning. Here’s a definition you can hold onto.

Faith, pistis, in the Greek language, means a conviction of truth, a belief, firm persuasion.

Firm persuasion. My translation: FULLY CONVINCED! Do we live and walk out our faith as if we are fully convinced? Living as a woman of faith requires us to be ALL IN, fully convinced that God is who He says He is, Has done what He said He would do, and will continue to faithful to His words.

Components of Faith

The first two components are taken out of Hebrews 11:1,

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”.

This is by far the best verse to bring clarity to the meaning of faith. Let’s break down some of the meanings of these words:

1 | TRUTH – “The substance of things hoped for…”

Substance is a scientific word, hypostasis, which means the opposite of hypothesis or theory. For something to have substance it must exist. It has to be real.

Hope comes from the Greek word, elpizō, which means absolute surety. It’s not a desire that we wish for, but rather a promised outcome.

2 | EVIDENCE – “…Evidence of things unseen.”

Evidence, or elegchos, is a legal term. It describes something that has been verified. Evidence points to the truth. It is a factual reality as opposed to fantasy.; tangible proof that we have and experience through our senses.

Hebrews 11:1 tells us that faith is not a theory, but an absolute surety of spiritual reality. It is verified proof of things we have yet to see. A woman of faith will take God at His word. His Word of truth is the evidence she has for what she believes.

How Purposeful Faith Shapes Our Actions

The next three components of faith come from Hebrews 11:6. They focus on what we do with what we know (we referenced this verse earlier but there is still much to learn from it).

“But without faith, it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him”   Hebrews 11:6

3 | RESPONSE

Come, or proserchomai, means to draw near. In James 4:8 we are told to draw near to God and He will draw near to us. Without coming to God, you have no author and finisher of your faith (Hebrews 12:2). Faith without coming to God is like a book without an author: nonexistent. A woman of faith will respond to the truth by coming to God.

4 | BELIEF

Believe, pisteuō, means to be convinced of. I read once that to believe something is to act as if it were so. Our actions show more of what we believe than what we say. A woman of faith will not simply know the truth but will be committed to it. She will live as it matters.

5 | PURSUIT

If we do not live in order to seek God, it can only be because we do not really believe Him, or that He is not worthy of our attention. To seek Him, ekzēteō, to crave Him, is of utmost importance to our faith. A woman of faith does not allow her commitment to God to diminish. She is intentional and persistent about moving towards God and does not allow her faith to become stagnant.

3 Ways to Move Forward As A Woman of Faith

We’ve talked about what faith means and why it’s essential. Let’s cover three simple steps you can take to actively become a woman of faith.

1| Read and study the Word

Romans 10:17 reads,

Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.

Faith is the tool we need to please God. His words (made accessible to us in the Bible) teach us what pleasing Him encompasses. Women of faith are committed to knowing and studying God’s words. This is how we come to intimately know who God is, who He created us to be, and what He created us for.

2| Respond to the Holy Spirit

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” John 14:26 

When God or His Holy Spirit speaks to us, a woman of faith will be intentional about responding to Him.  She will seek Him through prayer and make herself available to listen.

3| Hear and Obey and God Leads

…Faith without works is dead (James 2:26)

Faith requires action. Works are not the price, but the proof of our salvation. If we were to take a minute and read through all of Hebrews chapter 11, known as The Hall of Faith, we would recognize that every person listed is there because they were obedient to God’s instruction even when it didn’t necessarily make sense to them. A woman of faith responds to God with obedience.

We can have all the knowledge of faith, but until we take intentional action steps our faith will not grow. We need to, as Jude 3 says, “Earnestly contend for the faith.” As we grow, our faith starts to shape our thoughts, actions, and behaviors, and through obedience, we morph into strong and virtuous women of faith.
